Tips for Keeping your Cat or Kitten Safe

Written by admin on May 4th, 2009 | Filed under: animals/pets

Cat owners get so pumped over their beloved feline pets, yet just like people they do not have an inkling about the wider world at large. They essentially run on pure energy and get all wired up with excitement, and then simply run without much forethought except to play and have a lot of fun. So if you are a new owner to 1 or more kitties, it will be up to you, to be your kittie’s guardian, to make sure you not only feed him or her the proper cat food, but to also make sure they do not end up getting hurt. Here are a few tips on how to keep your kitty safe:

1. Keep your kittens in a kennel or an open-topped box filled with newspaper or a towel, to keep them out of trouble when you cannot keep an eye on them. If you’ve adopted two kittens, they will probably be fine with that, since they have company. If your kitten is by himself, and is meowing a lot, you may want to put in a small stuffed animal, or wrap up a ticking clock in a soft towel and put it in the box to soothe him.

2. Purchase cat food that is especially for kittens as you want to make sure that they are not only getting the proper nutrition but that the morsels are the right size and that they won’t hurt your kitten’s new teeth. Depending on how old your kittens are, you may be restricted to a certain type of cat food. Check with your veterinarian. I personally sugget a leading premium cat food like Life’s Abundance, particularly in this era of pet food recalls. All in all, a premium grade food can really make a big difference over time.

.3. When your kitten is loose and on the run, be sure you know where he is at all times. A small kitten, though relatively tiny, can still climb with its claws and get into trouble.

They can knock over items, climb up to high places, and because they lack coordination

and some visual acuity at a young age, they are apt to fall and get hurt. Also, keep your kitten away from small children, as a young child could possibly fall and seriously injure, if not kill, your kitten accidentally. Unfortunately, I know of a few cases where this HAS happened. So please take care of your cute little kittens.

Having kittens can be a lot of fun, but they are a lot of responsibility. Be sure to have you kitten checked and vaccinated regularly, and to give him the best cat food to meet his daily nutritional needs!

Can an Old Dog Learn New Tricks?

Written by admin on Jun 3rd, 2008 | Filed under: animals/pets

This is an old-age question that mystifies the average person. So, can an old dog really learn new tricks? The answer is obviously YES! It’s rather simple really, a dog is one of the smarter animals on the planet, and every animal has to adapt in order to survive. It all goes back to the theory of evolution by Charles Darwin, which states that organisms and animals have physically and mentally changed their habits and behavior over time in order to survive. So to suggest that an older dog is incapable of learning new behaviors is a pretty ridiculous statement.

Teaching an old dog a new trick is possible but it does take time and commitment. If you have a stubborn dog you may need the help of an experienced dog trainer in order to see some results with your dog. There are literally hundreds of qualified dog trainers throughout Canada but you need to do your research before selecting one. For example, some trainers only work with certain breeds of dogs while other trainers may only offer puppy training or dog training depending on their specialty.

Finding a good dog trainer to help with your dog’s behavior is essential if you want to have a healthy and happy relationship with your pet. Dog obedience goes a long way in ensuring this healthy relationship. So even if your dog is starting to age in year and their behavior is unacceptable, or if you want your dog to learn a couple of new tricks, you should consider the benefits that a professional dog trainer can offer.

Some Key components of Canine health

Having a healthy dog is important. You want your best friend to be as healthy as possible. It is said they age twice as fast as humans so keeping them in top shape is imperative. It helps immunity and helps the aging process possibly slow down. There are many things to think about when you consider your dog’s health. Many of those things include dog food, vaccinations, exercise, water, love, and more.
Dog food is one of the most important things to think about if you want a healthy animal. Many of the shelf dog foods have chemicals that are not healthy for an animal. These dog foods are cheaper but they can be harmful to your animal. Consider a food with concentrated amounts of meat as protein as opposed to cheap fillers that are so hard to digest, can cause severe allergies and most importantly do nothing to keep your pet healthy.

Exercise is also important for any animal. Your dog should have sufficient amount of room to run around and play. If your dog is kept indoors for most of the day then you should take the time everyday to walk it outside and give it the exercise it needs. Ideally, a dog should have a good sized back yard to be able to run around in. If not consider a dog park. Exercise is important for a dog to keep their circulation healthy and their blood flowing. This allows for a healthy body, strong muscles, and a happier life for your dog. It also may help there mental state just like humans.
Water is important also. A dog can get dehydrated much quicker than a human being. You should always ensure your dog has plenty of water to drink each day and that it is always available to drink. You may even want to consider spring water or filtered water. The chemicals and other things from the faucet may not be so healthy.

Another important aspect to having a healthy pet is love. Dogs need daily interaction. They need plenty of petting, holding, and love. A dog’s primary goal is to please their owner and you need to show your pet that you entirely approve of them and it will be happy. Studies have shown that dog’s with a lack of love or interaction is not as healthy as pets that have a lot of love. You should spend time talking to your dog and playing with your dog. This will ensure you have a very healthy and happy pet that will last a long time.
A great conversation to start with your vet if you haven’t already is: vaccinations. It is becoming increasingly popular that pet parents refuse to vaccinate every year because many feel it is harmful to the pet. As puppies, vaccinations are necessary and can save your canine’s life. As they get older though you may want to ask your vet about titer testing to measure the antibodies in your baby’s system and then you can determine if that vaccination is necessary. Depending on where you live, some vaccinations are necessary and some are not. This is something you can discuss with your veterinarian.

Everyone wants their dog to be healthy to ensure their life and longevity. There are many factors that play a big role in making this happen and as their owner; your dog depends on you to ensure they have a healthy life. You should ensure the food your dog is being fed is healthy, drinking plenty of water, getting plenty of exercise each day, and you are giving it plenty of love and knowing more about vaccinations.
