Policeman Charged For possibly Dealing Drugs In Philadelphia

Written by admin on Apr 4th, 2009 | Filed under: Legal News

In legal criminal news from south of the border, Philadelphia Police Officer Alhinde Weems was charged with allegedly dealing illegal narcotics after being caught in a drug bust.

It appears that Weems showed up at a motel where he thought a local drug lord was armed and prepared to shoot the dealer. However, he instead was being setup as a part of a bust, according to reports from Deputy Commissioner Richard Ross who also stated Weems has “dishonored the badge.” Looks like someone may require a good lawyer. he was brought in without icident or injury.

Federal authorities state that he had dealt drugs prior to becoming a Phillidelphia Police Officer and continued to do so after he became an officer in the city. Weems was assigned to the 18th District in West Philadelphia.

The U.S. Lawyer’s Office in Philadelphia, Linda Hoffa, claimed that the defendent has no criminal record and the investigation started late last year following a tip from an informant employed with an agent from the ATF passed the information to the agent. By the way if you require an excellent Philadelphia personal injury lawyer then may I suggest the Law Offices of Mark Rosenberg. He is one of the best personal injury lawyer you will find in the city.

If convicted of the charges Weems could face up to 25 years in prison and union president John McNesby stated they would not be representing Weems stating, “you can not sell drugs and be a Philadelphia Police officer.

Weems wife Shena Weems a nurse at the Hospital University of Pennsylvania stated she was shocked at the arrest of her husband.

When Weems was arrested for drug dealing and conspiracy, Lamar Smith age 27 was also arrested and charged with conspiracy.

Factiods regarding Directors’ and Officers’ liability Insurance: Part 2

Written by admin on Nov 25th, 2008 | Filed under: Legal News

This article was written by Todd Picker, an Orange County Orange County Accident Attorney:
Regarding the recent insurance legal article by our expert Attorney:

A lawsuit to recover damages from Pacific’s directors and officers was ultimately filed in June 1989. According to the RTC, Pacific’s officers and directors were allegedly responsible for involving Pacific in a programme of high-risk com¬mercial and construction lending and investment which, while appearing profitable, in fact concealed losses. In addition, the directors and officers were apparently in¬volved in various improper loan, syndication and excessive compensation schemes. The wrongful conduct in question allegedly began in 1981 and continued through 1987, when a majority of Pacific’s directors resigned. The RTC con¬tended that the directors’ and officers’ conduct could not have been discovered until some time after June of 1987.
The claims asserted by the RTC against the directors and officers included breach of fiduciary duty, negligence and breach of contract. The loss occasioned by their conduct allegedly exceeded $70 million.
Pacific had purchased five directors’ and officers’ liability insurance policies which were in effect between 1980 and 1988. The first policy covering 1980 through 1983 was issued by MGIC Indemnity Corporation. The second was in place between 1983 and 1985 and was also issued by MGIC. The last three policies were issued by CNA and included an exclusion for claims made by regulatory agencies (see Note 6 below). CNA subsequently purchased MGIC’s directors’ and officers’ business and assumed responsibility for expired and cancelled MGIC policies.5 (For purposes of conven¬ience the policies are collectively referred to as CNA’s policies.) Each of the policies included ‘discovery coverage’ and entitled Pacific to advance notice of cancellation or a refusal to renew. Incidentially if you reside in Orange County or nearby areas and you require a leading Orange County accident Attorney then may I strongly suggest the Law Offices of Todd Picker as he is one of the best Orange County accident Attorney working right now, it seems to me.
This ‘discovery coverage’ provided Pacific with the right to purchase insurance for ‘any claim or claims … made against the Directors or Officers during the period of twelve calendar months after the date of such … refusal to renew, but only with respect to [acts] committed before the date of such … non-renewal’. The CNA policies also included a ‘Notice of Claims’ clause which provided in relevant part:
If during the policy period [Pacific] … becomes aware of any occurrence which may subsequently give rise to a claim being made against the Directors and Officers … and shall during such period, give written notice thereof to the insurer as soon as practicable and prior to the date of termination of the policy,

OT: Hedge Fund Manager Found Guilty

Written by admin on Oct 17th, 2008 | Filed under: Legal News

This article is a little bit off topic, but I just got back from Chicago and have been following the news in the states so I wanted to write about this article: Michael Lauer, the hedge fund manager who has been on trial has been found guilty by a Miami U.S. District Court Judge Kenneth A. Marra of defrauding investors during the years of 1999 and 2002 totaling over $500 million dollars. He must not have had the best Attorney in the world.

Judge Marra found in a 67 page order that Lauer had manipulated the prices of seven securities. These were a large part of the funds portfolios, which Lauer did not provide a basis for the exceedingly high valuations. Judge Marra found he also lied to investors about the hedge funds holdings also. As the head of the Lancer Management Group and Lancer Management Group II, his actions were premeditated and resulted in the loss of millions of investor’s funds. I realize that no one really suffered personal injury but it is emotionally painful to lose funds like that.

A ruling has not been given on the amount that Lauer will pay pending a evidentiary hearing and a fine amount decided by the Securities Exchange Commission that must be made within 60 days. By the way if you happen to live in Chicago or the surrounding region and need an elite
Chicago Personal Injury Attorney then may I please suggest the fine Budin Law offices as he is one of the finest Chicago Personal Injury Attorney around that whole area.

The criminal trial for Lauer will begin in April for the charges in the hedge fund and according to his Attorney stated that Lauer will be pleading not guilty and will fight the charges at trial. The Attorney who is representing Lauer is Norman Moscowitz.

Canadian Man found dead in Denver Hotel

Written by admin on Aug 14th, 2008 | Filed under: Legal News

In some of the more recent legal news out of Denver, Colorado, the Body of an Ottawa man was found in the Burnsley Hotel which is located near the Colorado State Building in Denver. According to Denver police officials and other authorities, the man had apparently been dead for several days before the discovery of his body was made.
The Denver medical examiners office reported that a very strong smell of cyanide was present at the scene of the death in question and a bottle of white powder was found near the body as well. After a dangerous material assessment regarding the contents of the bottle, the Denver police decided not to order evacuations from the said hotel. It is not clear at this point in time if the man commited suicide or if he suffered any personal injury prior to the fatality, which was possibly quite swift.
The Police on this case seem to suspect that Saleman died of cyanide poisoning. The bottle of white powder is being studied at this time and officials are waiting for toxicology reports after an autopsy was completed on Abdirham’s on Tuesday of last week. Incidentially if you happen to reside in the great Mile High City and you require a wonderful Denver personal injury attorney then you should certainly take a peak at the Law offices of Mr. Larry Lee. He is a particularly high echelon Denver personal injury attorney and covers wrongful death in a wide variety of different cases.
According to several relaible news and media sources, when the discovery of Abdiraham’s body was reported and the odor of cyanide was found at the scene, emergency personnel were prompted to cordon off the hotel and surrounding streets for a brief period of time. There were no reports of other hotel guests or employees’ complaining of illness and no contamination was found anywhere else in the hotel in question, which is great news in an otherwise grim case. All in all, many of the details of this case are murky and there are many questions left to be answered fully. For example, what was the motice behind the death, murder or suicide. What exactly is the chemicle composition of the white powder which was found at the scene? Also, what exactly was this Canadian man doing in Denver at the time of his death. Did anyone have a motive for wanting him dead? Was there any possible terrorism involved here? These and the other questions should be answered soon because it has also been reported recently that FBI investigators have been called in to help with the investigation at hand.

DUI Offenders Work Off Community Service

Written by admin on Mar 16th, 2008 | Filed under: Legal News

Alright more legal news from the Golden State in general and Los Angeles in particular… In California’s effort to clean up the state they spent approximately $62 million during the 2006-2007 budget year and Caltrans spent an approximate $12 million per year to clean up garbage that litters the freeways and highways. As this battle goes on between those who throw trash out of their car windows and those who try to keep the highways clean goes on and this year in an event named California Litter Removal Day where they employed the use of dui offenders, suited in orange vests.

For these work crews mission was the litter on parts of San Bernardino and

Ontario freeways. These crews of

California dui offenders collected approximately 2.9 million pounds of garbage thrown on the freeways and worked off some of their court ordered service.  The amount that was collected across the state would have been enough to have filled approximately 75 Olympic swimming pools just in the amount of time the dui offenders were collecting highway garbage.  By the way if you live in Southern California and require a solid accident attorney

Los Angeles
please take a look at the

Law Offices of Steven Sweat. He is not only a sold accident attorney

Los Angeles

But can also help with thingssuch as construction injuries, dog bites or a motorcycle accident. So whether you live in Beverly Hills orEastern Los Angeles, he can be of some assistance. His site is called Victimslawyer.com for a reason. He is a compassionate attorney.

This is just a small part of what is the yearly battle against garbage on the sides of the highways and freeways of California and while there are fines for littering it has not deterred the motorist who use these roads. This is not just happening in Los Angeles and

Southern California, either. In the

Pacific Northwest, even councilmembers are getting pulled over and booked for drunk driving and related offenses. For example, King County Councilwoman Jane Hague has recently recieved 6 months of probation for her recent dui case and a judge has ordered her to  perform seventy-five odd hours of community service, according to her attorney. It just shows that your station in life does not make you immune to such charges, they are common across all social strata of society.
